Handover of a cytometer to the Kyiv Regional Children’s Hospital

02/07/2025
Recently, ASB Ukraine provided assistance to the municipal non-profit enterprise «Kyiv Regional Children's Hospital» of the Kyiv Oblast Council Київська Обласна Дитяча Лікарня. Within the project «Modernization of medical equipment for the rehabilitation of healthcare facilities», for the institution it was purchased and installed a flow cytometer. In addition, to operate it for a certain period of time, it was also provided a set of reagents.

In simple terms, a flow cytometer is a special device that helps analyze cells labeled with special fluorescent markers.

How does it work?

- The sample cells are treated with special reagents that have fluorescent labels, and certain labels bind to certain cells depending on their type.
- Then, one at a time, these labeled cells are passed through a laser beam.
- A flow cytometer counts and categorizes cells based on light scattering and fluorescence intensity. This allows detailed analysis of cell populations.

What is this for?

- Effective treatment of children suffering from cancer disease - this option is based on accurate diagnostics, which determines the leukemia or lymphoma tumor cellstype.
- The treatment effectiveness concept – the residual tumor cells, namely in small quantities, parts per million, detection. This helps to coordinate a therapy promptly and overthink concerning bone marrow transplantation as well.
- Identification of immunodeficiencies and blood tests - analyzes immune cells, their number and functioning. Diagnosis is made by examining immune disorders and selecting appropriate treatment.
- Scientific research – consequently, the new opportunities for studying cells and modern treatment methods developing are opening up.

To simply put, it is a cell scanner that helps doctors and scientists quickly obtain important information concerning the body state.

The device is placed in a specially equipped room of the clinical diagnostic laboratory department that meets the necessary technical and operational requirements for its functioning. Moreover, it is planned a personnel training to acquire the operation of this equipment.

We are grateful to NACHBAR IN NOT for financial support of the project.
