Olha, Andrii and Their Family: A Journey Through Hope and Resilience

24/07/2025
The work within the project named «Humanitarian assistance in the areas of basic needs, food security, hygiene, winterization and PSS for conflict-affected people of Ukraine», implemented by the ASB Ukraine team with the financial support of Auswärtiges Amt continues.

Financial assistance is provided to internally displaced persons who have limited financial resources and comply with the clear socio-economic vulnerability criteria.
During one of the monitoring visits we had a conversation with Olha and Andrii family.

February 24, 2022 completely changed the life of the family. On this day, they woke up due to the explosions, louded before the dawn. The air-raid warning signaled that a full-scale invasion had begun. At the same moment, Olha and Andrii packed the most necessary stuff and left the native Mariupol, bringing along their children.

Initially, trying to stay close to home, they settled in Zaporizhzhia. However, new air raid alarms as well as explosions, that sounded every day frightened them more and more. That’s why, when it became too dangerous, the family decided to move on to a quieter place, namely Lviv.

Adaptation to a new life was challenging. The city, the people and the new conditions as well are seemed alien. However, they met incredibly good people, namely volunteers, neighbors, and just strangers who supported them.

Nowadays, the family lives in Kyiv region. This apartment which was provided to them for free is located in one of the towns built specifically for internally displaced persons who lost their homes. A new housing was a real gift for Olha, Andrii and their children as well.

First of all, the family is grateful to ASB, which provided them with the multi-purpose cash assistance. Thanks to these funds provided, the parents were able to organize a sports competition trip for their children. Part of the funds was invested by the household for future spending.

«We are grateful to every person, who did not leave us alone. Thanks to their support, we were able to survive. » - says Mrs. Olha. It is important to say, that such kind of stories illustrated the Ukrainians strength, the depth of our humanity and also the support importance.
