Shelter Renovation Strengthens Education and Community Resilience
11/12/2025
In wartime conditions, shelters in educational institutions are critical for protect life and health of students, teachers, and residents. They not only provide physical protection during air raid alerts or shelling but also create a sense of security that allows the educational process to continue even in difficult circumstances. Such spaces become a pillar of support for the community, ensuring that the education and development of youth will not stop despite the challenges of war. Restoring such infrastructure is key to the resilience and safety of the population.
One such shelter, covering an area of approximately 600 m², is located at the State University of Economics and Technology in Kryvyi Rih.
As part of the “Rebuilding Roots” project implementation, existing structures were dismantled, new flooring was installed, and wall partitions were assembled. Separate restrooms for men and women were built, as well as a separate room for people with disabilities. A new ventilation system was installed throughout the shelter.
Communications have been installed according to the needs of the premises using a cable and wire system. A fire alarm system has also been installed. Decorative work is currently underway, including plastering, filling, and painting the walls. An electric lift for people with limited mobility will be installed to ensure inclusivity.
All the works are planned to be completed by the end of January 2026.
With the shelter renovation, the community will not only get a safe space for students and teachers, but also a noticeable boost in resilience and in the quality of learning conditions. Rehabilitation of infrastructure is based on the “Build Back Better” principle, which at the same time builds trust in the educational environment, creates safe learning conditions, and strengthens the community's ability to face wartime challenges.
Over 3 000 students and teachers will benefit from the support provided and will be able to study and teach offline.
All work is being carried out as part of the “Rebuilding Roots” project, which ASB Ukraine is implementing with the support of the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ).
